Anti-NATO protesters demonstrate on streets of Chicago

Hundreds of anti-NATO protesters wound through the streets of Chicago on Saturday night ahead of the opening of the NATO summit on Sunday. Some sections clashed with the Chicago police, although there were only about half a dozen arrests. The first video here shows Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaitė met by an angry protest shortly after her arrival to Chicago. Lithuanian protesters blocked her car and shouted at her in Lemont. Other videos show protesters practising non-violent civil disobedience and, later in the night, demonstrating loudly. However, as the last video shows, not everyone is against the summit: the restaurants of Chicago are celebrating the event.

Robin Gibb dies age 62.

Robin Gibb of Bee Gees died on Sunday following a long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. He was one of the founding members of the Bee Gees and the following videos show some recent interviews with Robin and some of the classic Bee Gees songs from the 1980's.

Italy struck by quake and school blast

At least seven people were killed and scores injured when a 5.9M earthquake struck northern Italy on May 20. Residents fear that aftershocks will worsen the condition of factories and historic buildings already damaged by the quake. Meanwhile, the country is still reeling from a deadly bomb explosion in front of a school in the city of Brindisi. The blast on May 19 killed a teenage girl and wounded 10 others. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

2012 Olympic Torch Relay gets underway

Three-time Olympic sailing champion Ben Ainslie kicked off the London 2012 Olympic torch relay, waving and interacting with the cheering crowd of all ages at Land's End in Cornwall. Around 3,500 people were there to see the start of the relay, which will involve 8,000 torchbearers carrying the flame 8,000 miles to the opening ceremony on July 27th. The torch relay travels nationwide, and organisers aim to bring the Olympic Flame to within 95 per cent of the UK population. SpaceX private space mission aborted

The private rocket company SpaceX had to abort the launch of its Dragon space capsule on a debut flight to the International Space Station, after unexpected engine pressure readings forced them to cancel Saturday's launch attempt at the last second. The launch countdown reached zero and the engines of the Falcon 9 rocket carrying Dragon ignited, only to be cut off seconds later because of an excessive pressure reading in one of the engines.
A news conference after the attempted launch was told the flight aborted at T minus 0.5 seconds. The commercial space capsule was due to make its inaugural flight to the orbiting space laboratory, becoming the first non-government craft to do so. The next launch opportunity is Tuesday at 3:44 a.m. EDT -and weather forecasters predict a 60 percent chance of good conditions for liftoff then.

G8 leaders gather for summit at Camp David

Leaders of the major world economies are meeting for talks at a Group of Eight (G8) summit in Camp David, one which has been somewhat overshadowed by the eurozone debt crisis. With the future of the euro in doubt, the leaders of the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Japan, Russia, Italy, and Canada will try to weigh competing demands for growth-friendly spending with Germany's long-standing focus on austerity. Before the start of the first working session of the G8 summit, Obama told reporters that all the G8 nations were "absolutely committed" to the goals of growth, stability, and fiscal consolidation, as the leaders tried to bridge divisions on how to deal with the eurozone crisis. There were small protests in nearby Maryland towns, as Obama welcomed the world leaders, all wearing casual attire as is tradition at Camp David.

Facebook IPO hits the stock exchange

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg opened trading on the Nasdaq today from a ceremony in California, ahead of the social network's share sale. Facebook's hugely anticipated IPO is expected to value the Silicon Valley firm at upwards of $100 billion. But questions are being asked by insiders and new investors alike as to whether this the sign of a new Internet bubble? Or if Facebook is worth owning, then why did company insiders dump $9.2 billion in shares? The shares notched up big opening gains amid high demand and frenzied trading on the NASDAQ stock market under the ticker FB. The IPO could become the second-largest initial public offering in history, surpassing the value of General Motors' IPO.

Donna Summer, disco diva, dies aged 63

New crew joins the International Space Station

Two Russians and an American have boarded the International Space Station (ISS) from a Soyuz spacecraft that was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Tuesday. Arizona wildfires threaten homes and businesses

Strong winds and dry weather have caused wildfires to rage and increase in size across parts of Arizona. Firefighters continue to try and prevent one particular wildfire that's spreading from the west of Crown King, the historic mining town. At least 4 other blazes have also burnt more than 5,000 acres of forest, brush and grassland and consumed half a dozen buildings.

NATO summit in Chicago faces protests & difficult questions

Police have arrested protesters outside downtown Chicago buildings, from the federal immigration court to the Obama campaign HQ. Many more protests are planned in the lead up to this weekend's NATO summit. Thousands of protesters from a diverse coalition of organizations including unions, antiwar groups, immigrant rights organizations and the Occupy movement are expected to march in the streets. A massive security operation is planned, with the Department of Homeland Security declaring the summit a "National Special Security Event", on a par with the Superbowl or political conventions. Defence ministers will be aiming to narrow their differences at the summit, as more allies prepare to bring their forces home early from Afghanistan.

Facebook's IPO gets markets buzzing

Facebook has increased the size of its initial public offering of shares by 25 percent, after putting up the target price range of the shares in what could be the third biggest US IPO ever, after Visa and General Motors. The IPO is currently on track to raise as much as $16 billion dollars. This increased offering is a reaction to strong investor demand for shares in the top social networking website. However, opinion remains divided on the value of Facebook, and analysts have voiced concerns about its actual long-term money making potential. These concerns over revenue growth were underscored when, days before the IPO, General Motors said it planned to pull out of advertising on Facebook. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been on a cross-country roadshow in which he has taken to the stage to lay out his vision for the company's potential and its top priorities.

UN monitors' vehicle hit amid ongoing Syrian violence

Syrian activists say at least 21 people have been killed by government forces, during a visit by UN observers to a town in Idlib province. The activists say soldiers opened fire on a funeral procession in the town of Khan Sheikhoun on Tuesday. The UN has also confirmed that several of its vehicles were damaged by an explosion during their visit. The lead video in this playlist shows the moment a UN monitors' car is attacked, shearing off the front of one vehicle and damaging two others. Elsewhere, attacks continued in towns from Aleppo to Rastan, and over the border into Tripoli, Lebanon. The refugee crisis is also growing on a daily basis, with Turkey facing a growing number of Syrians seeking shelter.

Greece faces crisis as coalition talks fail

Greece was set to try again on Tuesday to form a coalition government, in a last gasp attempt to avoid a new election and a possible exit from the euro. All parties, bar the far-right Golden Dawn, were involved in the talks. New elections and debt defaults face Greece after continued uncertainty around its election outcome. Elsewhere, Greece's potential exit from the euro was once again top of the agenda as finance ministers gathered in Brussels for their monthly Eurogroup meeting.

Protest marches held throughout Syria

Anti-regime protests took place across Syria even as opposition forces claimed a victory against Syrian military forces. Fires were started as rallies took place in central Damascus, which called for the continued support of the Free Syrian Army. Similarly, UN observers were swamped by local people when they arrived in Aleppo. A large crowd surrounded the UN vehicle to protest at the ongoing violence in the country. The protests came as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed rebels killed 23 Syrian soldiers on Monday, in battles around the town of Rastan.

Romney sticks to guns as marriage equality debate rages on

The debate over same-sex marriage continued over the weekend as GOP presumptive nominee Mitt Romney briefly addressed the debate during a speech to Liberty University. "As fundamental as these principles are, they may become topics of democratic debate," Romney said. "So it is today with the enduring institution of marriage...Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman." Social media was abuzz earlier in the week with the news that US president Barack Obama had personally endorsed same-sex marriage. In an exclusive interview with ABC, the president said he had concluded "that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."

People across America celebrated Mother's Day on Sunday to share their sentiments and express profound love for their mothers. US political figures were particularly vocal with their wishes on Mother's Day, with Scott Walker, Marco Rubio, Mitt Romney and US President Barack Obama releasing videos to mark the occasion. However, a campaign called #NoMothersDay is gaining steam in the US and Canada. The campaign was created to increase awareness about maternal mortality rates.
